Human rights of migrant women workers in janitorial services and night clubs: A case of North Cyprus. International Journal of Social Economics, Vol. 35 (Iss: 6), pp.435 – 448.0306-8293http://hdl.handle.net/11129/1107http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?articleid=1723915&show=abstractOriginality / Value – The paper provides practical suggestion for the improvement of human rights protections for migrant women workers in North Cyprus.Purpose – To discuss the gender dimension of migration and human rights, and to provide an assessment of how to improve human rights protections for migrant women workers in janitorial services and night clubs across registered and unregistered migrant women workers in North Cyprus.
Design/methodology/approach – A survey is done to establish the employment conditions of migrant women workers in both sectors. The conditions are evaluated to assess the compliance with North Cyprus labor and immigration legislation and international human rights protocols.
Findings – Registered and unregistered segment of the janitorial services and unregistered segment of sex industry are dominated by Turkish migrant women. The registered part of sex industry is dominated by Eastern European migrant women mostly due to the legislative framework within which these two activities operate, primarily with respect to immigration requirements and also as it pertains to the remunerative potential of activity. No evidences of human rights abuses of Turkish immigrants in either segment of the cleaning services sector are founded but lack of knowledge of their conditions in unregistered sex work. Eastern European migrants working in the registered segment of the sex industry suffer human rights and basic migrant rights abuses at the hands of the state and the employer.
Research limitations/implications – Lack of knowledge of Turkish migrant women workers' conditions in unregistered segment of sex work limits the findings of the research. A survey across unregistered Turkish sex workers is suggested for future research.
Practical implications – Legalization of commercial sex among registered konsomatrices would provide an opportunity for labor rights legislation to be fully applied to their primary income-earning activities. Most of the human and immigrant rights violations are the result of legislation applied to nightclubs and work visas for konsomatrices. Improvements in the legislation and work visas for konsomatrices would guarantee the women to have access to assistance in case of human rights violations.
Originality/value – The paper provides practical suggestion for the improvement of human rights protections for migrant women workers in North Cyprus.enInternational Journal of Social Economics / Emerald Group Publishing LimitedCyprus - Human Rights - Migrant Workers - Women WorkersHuman rights of migrant women workers in janitorial services and night clubs: A case of North CyprusArticle03 Faculty of Business and EconomicsBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and Economics

This paper, adopting a ‘labour’ approach to migrant sex work, focuses on working conditions in nightclubs and pubs. We examine the effects of laws governing immigration to North Cyprus and furnishing the regulatory framework for ‘entertainment’ establishments. Our research involved data from the relevant government offices; newspaper reports; and interviews with a member of the House of Representatives, a nightclub owner and a sample of 16 women working in the industry. Our principal finding is the contradiction of an official policy that on the one hand rules prostitution in nightclubs and pubs illegal while on the other submits the women in question to punitive regulations that implicitly acknowledge their engagement in sex work and enable tax revenue from their earnings, while failing to protect their interests and rights.enWomen's Studies International Forum / ELSEVIERMigrant Sex Workers - Cyprus, NorthMigrant Sex Workers and State Regulation in North CyprusArticle03 Faculty of Business and EconomicsBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and Economics

In the first part of the paper, the position of women is evaluated. Consequently the labor force participation rate in terms of age and education levels, distribution by main occupations and by major industries, employment status, inactivity rate and employment and unemployment by education levels are analyzed. To measure the occupational segregation, Occupational Segregation Indices by main occupations and by major industries are calculated. In the second part of the paper, Gender Related Development Index (GDI) and Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) are used to show TRNC's position in the international ranking.ÖZET: Meslekici Ayirimcilik: Kuzey Kibris Turk Cumhuriyeti Emek Piyasasinda Kadinin Yeri

foreign policy where it examines the interplay between important world events and emergent
novel ideas at four different levels of analysis (conceptual setting, micro-setting, domestic
macro-setting, and external macro-setting). The new Turkish foreign policy vision and its
normative strategy, derived from Davuto[gbreve] lu’s Strategic Depth, have been blended with five
new principles: balance between security and freedom; zero problems with neighbors; multidimensional
and multi-track policies; a new diplomatic discourse based on firm flexibility;
and rhythmic diplomacy.engTaylor and Francis10.1080/14683841003747062info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessTurkey - Foreign PolicyTurkey - International RelationsA Paradigm Shift in Turkish Foreign Policy:Transition and ChallengesarticleTurkish StudiesEastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Political Sciences and International RelationsTR22085011110312303 Faculty of Business and EconomicsBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and Economics

This analysis lays the groundwork in assessing just how far we are from a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus conflict. The author first evaluates the progress accomplished by the two leaders in the peace negotiations since 2008 when the current round of negotiations started. Second, he looks at how far they are today in finalizing a comprehensive peace plan. Third, he assesses where the public opinion on both sides of the UN divide stand vis-à-vis a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem. Here, the author identifies the main obstacles confronting a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus conflict. Finally, based on the overall analysis, the author speculates on future scenarios and proposes recommendations for the UN to help bring the conflict to a comprehensive settlement.engSETA Foundationinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessİnsight TurkeyCypriot leadersCyprus conflictPeace NegotiationsCyprus ProblemCyprus IssueCyprus QuestionCyprus DisputeHeading Towards the Defining Moment in Cyprus: Public Opinion vs Realities on the GroundotherInsight TurkeyEastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Political Sciences and International RelationsTR22085014110912903 Faculty of Business and EconomicsBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and Economics

state to get the other (non-leader/client) states to cooperate with its policies. Most of
the literature on cooperation operates on the level of bargaining power where the policy
changes are directly visible. Th is article aims to show how the bargaining power model
is not adequate in capturing the complete picture of the relationship between Turkey (a
non-leader/client state) and the United States (leader/patron state) in their cooperation
with regard to Iraq during the Gulf Crisis (1990) and the War against Iraq (2003). Hence,
I attempt to show that the three levels of power as discussed by Krause is a better and
more comprehensive framework for understanding and explaining the power relationship
between Turkey and the US.engUluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneğiinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessTurkeyIraqBargaining PowerStructural PowerHegemonic PowerA Theoretical Evaluation of Different Faces of Power: US-Turkey Relations Towards IraqarticleUluslararası İlişkiler DergisiEastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Political Sciences and International RelationsTR220850624557803 Faculty of Business and EconomicsBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and Economics

The election outcome is important in understanding political trends in northern Cyprus before the April 2010 Presidential election, which will be significant for the current peace negotiations. The latter are considered by many observers as the last roll of the dice in terms of attempts to resolve the Cyprus conflict. The comeback of the old guard UBP is considered as the normalisation of politics in northern Cyprus. Although the UBP claims that it supports the ongoing peace negotiations, its historical baggage reveals just the opposite.engTaylor & Francis Group10.1080/13608740903416345info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessLegislative electionCyprus conflictPeace NegotiationsThe Turkish Cypriot Legislative Election of April 2009: Towards the ‘Last Roll of the Dice’ in the Cyprus Conflict?articleSouth European Society and PoliticsEastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Political Sciences and International RelationsTR22085014333735003 Faculty of Business and EconomicsBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and Economics

concepts such as nation, people and self-determination, that are closely, in fact
organically, related to the concept of a nation state, and the problems associated with
them will be analyzed in different ‘waves’ (historical processes) of the emergence of
nation states. It is argued that the concept of sovereignty and other related concepts
were in each ‘wave’ abused first by the monarchist leaders and later by the nation
states, great powers and the international community. The author makes some modest
recommendations for the international relations and international law literatures about
how to establish and maintain peace in the new world order in the twenty-first century,
given the current context consisting of a fragmented international society and that of
several ethnic conflicts, such as the ethnic violence in Kosovo, Northern Ireland, and

for European Union (EU) membership presents an important challenge for both the Union’s eastern enlargement plans and current international efforts aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem. The conclusions indicate that the Cypriot conflict has entered a very delicate period in its protracted and troublesome history characterized by a deadlock game. Strong domestic and international factors have created the conditions for each side to follow a non-cooperative strategy aimed at unilateral victory rather than a compromise. In this regard, the EU’s promise to the Greek Cypriots of membership in the Union, regardless of the settlement of the Cyprus problem, serves as a side payment that enforces non-cooperative strategy. Likewise, Turkey’s overwhelming military superiority in the region and its unconditional support for the Turkish Cypriots strengthens the Turkish side’s rigid position in the Cyprus negotiations. Under these circumstances, it is argued that an influential third party like the United States is needed to coordinate the efforts of the UN and EU to move the two parties away form a deadlock game.
This effort requires a package approach to the issues surrounding the Cyprus problem, the island’s membership in the EU, and EU-Turkey relations.engBrill Academic Publishers10.1163/138234002761384990info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessBargainingCyprusEuropean UnionEU enlargementGame theoryTurkish Cypriotİnternational conflictNegotiationGreek CypriotCyprus ProblemCyprus ConflictCyprus IssueCyprus QuestionCyprus DisputePeace NegotiationsNegotiating a Resolution to the Cyprus Problem: Is Potential EU Membership a Blessing or a Curse?articleInternational NegotiationEastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Political Sciences and International RelationsTR2208507226128503 Faculty of Business and EconomicsBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and Economics

of dividend payers, the size effect and the increasing dividend/earnings concentration found
in several developed and emerging markets exist among the industrials traded in the ISE. The
study also analyzes the effects of the reinstatement of mandatory dividend policy in 2003.
Using univariate statistical tests, we detect a size effect as well as a high level but stable dividend/earnings
concentration. We find a significant decrease in the number of dividend payers,
but we also detect an increasing level of real/nominal dividends driven by the high dividend/earnings

nitelikte bir ölçek olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.turAnadolu Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Eğitim Bilimleri Bölümüinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessGüvenilirlik ve Geçerliliği BelirlemeİKG Uzmanlarıİnsan kaynağı geliştirme uzmanı yeterlikleri ölçeğinin geliştirilmesi.articleEğitim ve BilimEastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Education, Department of Educational SciencesTR22084622107616803 Faculty of Business and EconomicsBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and Economics

There is considerable lack of literature with respect to service quality in public and private hospitals. Design/method/approach - Randomly, 454 respondents, who have recently benefited from hospital services in Famagusta, were selected to answer a modified version of the SERVQUAL Instrument. The instrument contained both service expectations and perceptions questions. Findings - This study identifies six factors regarding the service quality as perceived in both public and private Northern Cyprus hospitals. These are: empathy, giving priority to the inpatients needs, relationships between staff and patients, professionalism of staff, food and the physical environment. Research results revealed that the various expectations of inpatients have not been met in either the public or the private hospitals Research implications/limitations - At the micro level, the lack of management commitment to service quality in both hospital settings leads doctors and nurses to expend less effort increasing or improving inpatient satisfaction. Hospital managers should also satisfy their employees, since job satisfaction leads to customer satisfaction and loyalty. Additionally, hospital administrations need to gather systematic feedback from their inpatients, establish visible and transparent complaint procedures so that inpatients' complaints can be addressed effectively and efficiently. Originality/value - The hospitals need to organize training sessions based on the critical importance of service quality and the crucial role of inpatient satisfaction in the health care industry. Future studies should include the remaining regions in Cyprus in order to increase research findings' generalizability. Additionally, including other dimensions such as hospital processes and discharge management and co-ordination may provide further insights into understanding inpatients' perceptions and intentionsengEmerald Group Publishing10.1108/09526860810841129info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessCyprus, Private hospitalsPublic sector organizations, Patients, Customer services quality, Hospitals, HospitalsPrivate - organization & administration, Hospitals, Public - organization & administration, Quality Indicators, Health Care - organization & administrationQuality Assurance, Health Care - organization & administration, Health care delivery, Customer services, Quality of service, Statistical analysis, StudiesGearing service quality into public and private hospitals in small islands: Empirical evidence from CyprusarticleInternational Journal of Health Care Quality AssuranceEastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Tourism, Faculty of Business and Economics, Cyprus International UniversityTR219325TR230894TR21888921182303 Faculty of Business and Economics11 Faculty of TourismBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and EconomicsTOU – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Tourism

We surveyed 206 users of a university Facebook page to investigate how it may be related to their identification with the university community and the university brand. We further investigate how this identification is associated with the trust and loyalty to the institution and is likely to be linked to positive behaviors such as promoting the university to their peers as an active member of the university community. Our results show that the perceived strength of the Facebook community is related to the identification with the university community and the university brand which in turn are related to trust and loyalty. Higher loyalty is linked to citizenship behaviors such as increased contribution to the educational process labeled in-role behaviors and providing positive word of mouth about the university labeled extra-role behaviors. With the challenges of a diverse and global student body which is expected to continue increasing, universities can benefit from use of social media in developing identity, loyalty and trust.engElsevier10.1016/j.chb.2016.09.018info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessInternationalization of higher educationOrganizational identificationBrand identificationLoyaltyTrustCitizenship behaviorsRole of social media community in strengthening trust and loyalty for a universityarticleComputers in Human BehaviorEastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Tourism, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Engineering6555055903 Faculty of Business and EconomicsDepartment of Electrical and Electronic Engineering02 Faculty of Engineering11 Faculty of TourismEEE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Electrical and Electronic EngineeringBE – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Business and EconomicsTOU – Journal Articles: Publisher & Author Versions (Post-Print Author Versions) – Tourism
