Bilge Karasu who won Sait Faik Short Story Award in 1971 with his book titled A Long Day's Evening is referred as one of the most important writers of the modern and postmodern literature in Turkey. This book consists of three stories named Island, Hill and The Mulberry Trees. Island and Hill are like two separate parts of a single story. The Mulberry Trees are similar to those two in terms of the main issues dealt with.
These stories examine the topics and concepts from different aspects at the same time while pushing the boundaries of linguistic, semantic and fictional structures within the text. Due to the used structures, the texts provides a new understanding that make the reader question his/her act of reading which he/she is familiar with, and encourage him/her to reconsider the conditions of his/her perception and interpretation of what he/she has read. The contents of the stories, in addition to the harmonious and conflicting features of the created meaningful relations, invite the reader to an associative, rich intellectual activity. Despite all these qualities, it has been observed that the work has not been adequately examined, and has not been interpreted in consideration with approaches that focus on the reader in particular. These stories not only tell about events or situations, but they also deal with the issues caused by the events and situations or the issues that led to those events and situations.
In this thesis, A Long Day's Evening is analyzed to reveal its semantic possibilities and narrative strategies from a reader-centered approach. The narrative strategies of
the author are questioned in terms of their effect on the possible meanings of the main text, as well as the relationship between the basic concepts used in the stories and the main meanings of the text. At the end of the study, it is found that the narrative strategies of the author could refute the meanings that were thought to be undeniable in the surface of the text. Also, the concepts that seem to be basic could become secondary, by the lower layers of the text, in terms of their efficiency in producing meaning.

ÖZ:
Türkiye’de modern ve postmodern edebiyatın önemli yazarlarından birisi olarak görülen Bilge Karasu, Uzun Sürmüş Bir Günün Akşamı eseriyle, 1971 yılında Sait Faik Hikaye Armağanı’nı kazanmıştır. Bu eser, Ada, Tepe ve Dutlar isimli üç öyküden oluşmaktadır. Ada ve Tepe tek bir öykünün iki ayrı parçası gibidir. Dutlar da üzerinde durulan temel meseleler açısından onlarla benzeşir. Bu öyküler, ele alınan konuları ve kavramları değişik yönleriyle birlikte irdelerken, aynı zamanda, dilsel, anlamsal ve kurgusal yapıların sınırlarını zorlayan metinlerdir. Bu sebeple, okura, alışageldiği okuma edimini sorgulatan, okurun, okuduğunu algılayıp anlamlandırabilmesinin koşullarını yeniden gözden geçirmesini teşvik eden bir anlayışı ortaya koymaktadırlar. Öykülerin içerikleri, oluşturulan anlamı üreten bağıntıların birbiriyle uyumlu ve çatışan özellikleriyle birlikte, okuru, çağrışımsal, zengin bir düşünsel etkinliğe davet etmektedir. Tüm bu niteliklerine rağmen eserin yeterince incelenmediği ve özellikle de, okuru odağına alan yaklaşımlar göz önünde tutularak yorumlanmadığı görülmüştür. Bu öyküler sadece olay ya da durumları anlatmazlar, aynı zamanda olay ve durumların neden olduğu meseleleri ya da olay ve durumlara neden olan meseleleri de incelemeye tabi tutarlar.
Bu tezde Uzun Sürmüş Bir Günün Akşamı, okur merkezli bir yaklaşımla, anlamsal olanaklarının ve anlatısal stratejilerinin ortaya çıkarılması yönünden ele alınmıştır. Yazarın metin içindeki anlatısal stratejileri ortaya konularak, bunların metnin olası anlamlarına etkisi gösterilmeye çalışılmış ve öykülerde ele alınan temel kavramların metnin temel anlamlarıyla ilişkisi araştırılmıştır. Çalışma sonunda yazarın anlatısal stratejilerinin metnin yüzeyince yadsınamaz diye düşünülen anlamları çürütebildiği
ve temel gibi görünen kavramların ise metnin alt katmanlarınca anlam üreten verimlilikleri yönünden ikincil hale gelebildiği görülmüştür.
