Bizans İmparatorluğu, Kıbrıs adasına iz bırakan en önemli medeniyetlerden biridir.
Hristiyanlık dinini daha hızlı ve kalıcı bir şekilde yaymak için ada içerisindeki birçok
bölgeye dinsel anıtlar ve kiliseler yaptıran Bizans İmparatorluğu, ihtişamlı mimari
özellikleri ile tüm dünyaya rehber olurken bu eserlerin bazı örneklerini de Kıbrıs
adasında yaptırmıştır. Osmanlı imparatorluğu Müslüman nüfusun artması ile çok
kültürlü / dinli bir ada haline gelen Kıbrıs uzun yıllar Hristiyanlar ve Müslümanların
ortak yaşam alanı olmuştur. 1960 yılında başlayan iç savaş ile adaya düzenlenen 1974
yılı barış harekatından sonra ise, ada ikiye bölünmüş ve Müslüman Kıbrıslılar Kuzey
bölgesine yerleşmiştir. 1974 sonrasında adanın Kuzey’inde kalan, tarihsel açıdan
önemli olan yöresel kiliseler, kullanıcılarının yokluğunda, bakım ve onarım göremez
hale gelmiş ve yıpranmıştır. Dinsel yapıların farklı dini toplumların himayesinde
bulunması, anıtlara verilen değerlere de yansımış ve özellikle kırsal alanlardaki
kiliselerde bakımsızlık çok yüksek seviyelere ulaşmıştır. Söz konusu sorunu irdelemek
ve çözüm önerileri geliştirmek amacıyla, uzun yıllardır kullanım dışı olan ve
bakımsızlık dolayısıyla önemli bozulma sorunlarının görüldüğü örnek bir Bizans
yapısı olarak Panagia Katharon Manastırı seçilmiştir. Yapı yıllar boyunca
bakımsızlığa maruz kalmış ve yıkılmaya yüz tutmuş olan manastır belgelenmiş,
yapının strüktür ve malzeme analizleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu verilere destek amaçlı
yapıdan numune alınarak laboratuvarda incelemeler yapılarak malzemeler hakkın da
bilgi sahibi olmak hedeflenmiştir. Yapı ile ilgili olarak toplanan veriler ışığında en
doğru kararı vererek koruma ve restorasyon ile yeniden işlevlendirme projeleri
geliştirilmiştir. Bu araştırma ile, Panagia Katharon Manastırı için bir proje
geliştirmenin yanı sıra, kırsal alanlarda bulunan farklı dinsel yapıların yapısal
durumlarına dikkat çekmek ve öncü bir çalışma ortaya koymak hedeflenmiştir.
The Byzantine Empire is one of the most significant civilizations that left its mark on
the island of Cyprus. In order to spread Christianity more rapidly and permanently, the
Byzantine Empire constructed religious monuments and churches in many regions of
the island. With its magnificent architectural features, the Byzantine Empire served as
a guide to the whole world, commissioning some of these works on the island of
Cyprus. As the Ottoman Empire saw an increase in the Muslim population, Cyprus,
which had become a multicultural/religious island, was a common living space for
Christians and Muslims for many years. However, following the internal conflict that
began in 1960 and the peace operation carried out in 1974, the island was divided, and
Muslim Cypriots settled in the Northern region. Following the peace operation of
1974, the historical regional churches remaining in the North of the island fell into
disrepair due to the absence of their users and lack of maintenance. The fact that
religious structures are under the auspices of different religious communities has also
reflected on the values attributed to the monuments, and neglect, especially in rural
areas, has reached very high levels in churches. In order to examine this problem and
develop solutions, Panagia Katharon Monastery, an example of a Byzantine structure
that has been unused for many years and has significant deterioration problems due to
neglect, has been selected. The monastery, which has been exposed to neglect for years
and is on the verge of collapse, has been documented, and structural and material
analyses of the building have been carried out. In order to support these data, samples
were taken from the structure and laboratory examinations were conducted to acquire
information about the materials. Based on the data collected regarding the structure,
projects for conservation, restoration, and reuse have been developed to make the most
accurate decision. This research aims not only to develop a project for Panagia
Katharon Monastery but also to draw attention to the structural conditions of different
religious structures in rural areas and to present a pioneering study.
