Evaluation of Ethical Concerns at Architectural Drawings in North Cyprus

Abstract

Whilst there has been considerable debate about ethical issues concerning architects, the ethical concerns posed by architectural drawings have seldom been questioned. The advance of computer technologies which has revolutionised the architectural drawings techniques has enabled a much more effective statement of architectural designs. As a result, the architectural drawings have begun to be more effective than the architectural designs. This research tackles the problems that exist at architectural drawings as an ethical problem. The main aim is to evaluate the problems at the drawings used at architectural sale catalogues and architectural competition boards in North Cyprus through the prism of Applied Ethics and Codes of Ethics and Conduct. The importance of ethics, in the broadest sense of its meaning, for the architectural profession is stressed. In addition to a qualitative analysis of the observations concerning architectural drawings used in the case of North Cyprus, this research also comprises a qualitative analysis of the discussions made with 15 architects within an interview workshop. These analyses were carried by taking Applied Ethics and Codes of Conduct as a basis to verify the problems that were perceived to exist at architectural drawings. The existence of these problems was verified when they were also expressed by the 15 architects and eventually a need for new rules and regulations concerning ethical issues was eventually established. The evaluations were made under the four main ethical problem headings of “Inconsistency”, “Misleading Promise” “Readability” and “Error” (IMRE). Subsequently, the conclusion that three of the aforementioned problems namely “Inconsistency”, “Misleading Promise” and “Error” (IME) were in existence at the architectural drawings used at North Cyprus was reached.

ÖZ: Etik ile ilgili olarak mimarları ilgilendiren konularda hatırı sayılır derecede tartışmalar gerçekleştirilmiş olmasına rağmen, mimari çizimlerin sunduğu etik endişeler ender sorgulanmıştır. Mimari çizim tekniklerinde devrime yol açan bilgisayar teknolojilerindeki gelişmeler mimari tasarımların günümüzde çok daha etkin bir şekilde ifade edilmelerini mümkün kılmıştır. Bunun bir neticesi olarak da sözkonusu mimari çizimler mimari tasarımlardan daha etkili olmaya başlamıştır. Bu araştırma mimari çizimlerde varolan sorunları etik bir problem olarak ele almaktadır. Esas amaç Kuzey Kıbrıs’taki mimari satış katalogları ile mimari çizim paftalarında kullanılan çizimlerdeki problemleri Uygulamalı Etik Teoriler (Applied Ethics) ile İş Ahlakı ve Davranış Kurallarına (Codes of Ethics and Conduct) açısından değerlendirmektir. En geniş anlamı ile etiğin mimarlık mesleği için arz ettiği öneme vurgu yapılmaktadır. Bu araştırma Kuzey Kıbrıs örneğinde mimari satış katalogları, mimari yarışma paftaları üzerinde kullanılan mimari çizimlerle ilgili gözlemlerin nitel bir analizinin yanısıra 15 mimar ile yapılan tartışmaların nitel bir analizini de içermektedir. Bu analizler Uygulamalı Etik teorileri (Applied Ethics) ile İş Ahlakı ve Davranış Kurallarını (Codes of Ethics and Conduct) temel alarak mimari çizimlerde var olduğu algılanan sorunları doğrulatmak amacı ile yapılmıştır. Bu sounların varoldukları bu sorunların varlığı 15 mimar tarafından da dile getirilmeleri üzerine doğrulanmış, neticede etik konularla ilgili yeni kural ve düzenlemelere ihtiyaç olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Değerlendirmeler, dört ana etik problem başlığı olan “Tutarsızlık”, “Yanıltıcı Vaat” “Okunabilirlik ve “Hata” üzerinden yapılmıştır. Neticede yukarıda sözü edilen problem gruplarından üç tanesinin “Tutarsızlık”, “Yanıltıcı Vaat” ve “Hata” problemlerinin Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta kullanılan mimari çizimlerde varoldukları sonucuna varılmıştır
