Study of Green Space Morphology and Typology in Urban Landscape of Northern Nicosia

Abstract

As cities are growing rapidly and more than half of the world’s population is living in urban areas, the quality of urban settlements has become a vital issue. The significant role of urban green spaces and vegetated areas have received attention from ecologists, environmentalists, and planners. Within this scope, one of the important issues that deal with green spaces is urban morphology in order to understand the morphology of green spaces. However, urban morphologists have only recently begun considering green space, and morphological analyses of green space are still rare. This study addresses this gap in historico-geographical and process typological approaches in order to examine the possibility of identifying “Green Space” as an individual element in urban structure. It proposes a systematic framework for assessing green space structure based on existing hierarchical theories in urban morphology introduced by M. R. G. Conzen, Caniggia, Kropf and Osmond. The framework is tested in the case of Northern Nicosia and particularly in three significant neighbourhoods, which are Köşklüçiftli, Çağlayan, and Yenişehır, to assess the opportunities provided by the framework, its limitations, and factors that played a role in its successful implementation. Kentlerin hızla büyümesi ve dünya nüfusunun yarısından fazlasının kentsel alanlarda yaşaması, kentsel yerleşimlerin kalitesinin sorgulanması bağlamında önemli bir noktaya gelmiştir. Kentsel yeşil alanların ve bitkisel yeşil alanların rolü ve önemi, ekolojistlerin, çevrecilerin ve planlamacıların dikkatini çekmiştir. Bununla birlikte, kent içerisindeki yeşil alanların kentsel morfoloji kapsamında irdelenmesi yeni çalışılmaya başlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda, bu çalışma, kentsel yapıda morfolojik unsur olarak “Yeşil Alan” ın tanımlanması için tarihsel-coğrafi ve tipolojik süreçlerdeki boşluğu ele alarak morfolojik yeşil alanın bu tür çalışmalarındaki tanımını yapar. Bu tez, M. R. G. Conzen, G.F. Caniggia, K. Kropf ve P.Osmond tarafından tanımlanan kentsel morfolojideki mevcut hiyerarşik teorilere dayalı yeşil alan yapısını değerlendirmek için sistematik bir çerçeve önermektedir. Oluşturulan çerçeveye bağlı, Kuzey Lefkoşa'daki Çağlayan, Köşklüçiftlik ve Yenişehir bölgeleri örneklem olarak incelenerek, çalışmanın sağladığı fırsatlar, sınırlamalar ve başarıya ulaşması için rol oynayan faktörler ele alınarak tartışılmıştır.
