Abstract

Wireless communication is an effective communication technology, which is supposed to support multimedia applications with desired QoS levels. Unfortunately, wireless media is subjective to various error sources resulting in high error rates that violate application requirements. In this study, we have proposed a novel adaptive error control (AEC) technique for WATM networks that can be implemented with popular WATM architectures. The adaptivity of our technique is achieved through the ability of adopting different code rates according to both wireless channel conditions and data type being transmitted. We have also proposed WATM cell structures that are tightly related to standard ATM cells. Through extensive simulations, our experiments' results provide the user with a gallery of code rate suits and other system parameters that the user may choose according to the application and the wireless network in use. © 2003 IEEE.
