| dc.description.abstract | This study aimed to investigate the use of web-based games and interactive activities (e.g. Baamboozle, Wordwall, Quizizz and Liveworksheets) to boost fourth-grade students' motivation to learn English as a Foreign Language and evaluate the impact of these on their academic progress in English class at a private primary school in Gazimağusa, TRNC, during the fall semester of 2022–2023. In this study, data collection and analysis were carried out by exploratory sequential mixed method approach. (n=40) The study's data collection included pre-tests and post-tests for both control and experimental groups, and teacher/researcher field notes during the intervention with the experimental group. In addition, the experimental group (n=19) was subjected to semi-structured interviews after the post-test. Accordingly, the Mann Whitney U-test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank test were run on SPSS for the analysis of pre-test and post-test, and MAXQDA was employed for the analysis of the semi-structured interviews. The findings demonstrated that concerning web-based games and interactive activities, students expressed a variety of positive feelings and willingness to employ more of them in the class. It was also reported that these games were both educational and entertaining reported by the students. However, although 73.7% of students in semi-structured interviews pointed out the web-based games and interactive activities influenced their academic development, the quantitative findings revealed that there isn’t any significant difference between the control and experimental group. Moreover, the current study had several implications and suggestions for future research and instructors on how to incorporate web-based games and interactive activities into the classroom successfully.
