dc.description.abstractNitinol (Nickel-titanium alloy) rotary instrument files are important devices in Endodontics in root canal preparation. Nitinol file breakage is a critical and problematic issue and Endodontists are forced to replace them in order to reduce the risk of file breakage. To solve breakage problems, an effective method has been introduced to develop a fuzzy logic controller for motor driven rotary instruments. An automated fuzzy logic-based control strategy is presented for controlling the RPM (Revolutions per Minute) and variable torque limited-reverse system in real time. The controller will make an intelligent decision on the amount of RPM and Torque limits that should be applied to motor driven rotary instruments to keep the nitinol files safe. The presented controller offers possibilities in a situation that would typically result in a decrease in failure and fracture of nitinol files. The concepts, as well as the implementation of the controller in vitro experiments are presented.
