Abstract

This study investigates energy efficiency optimization in residential buildings in Cyprus by the integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) energy performance simulation and energy life cycle analysis. With buildings accounting for nearly 36 % of global final energy use and 39 % of energy related carbon dioxide emissions the research addresses, critical need for sustainable construction practices in the Mediterranean region, where Cyprus experiences over 21,000 cooling degree hours per year. The research evaluates 120 combinations of building envelope materials and eight insulation materials by using both Autodesk Revit for BIM modelling and Autodesk Ecotect for energy performance simulation. The study also develops novel computational framework for embodied energy assessment by incorporating material transportation, and construction energy considerations. Results reveal that the optimal building envelope configuration, including specific combinations of floor roof and wall types achieves 32% reduction in energy load compared to the median scenario and a 59 % reduction compared to the least efficient combination, in the operational phase of the construction. The study finds that high density rock wool insulation requiring only 1.6 cm thickness turns out to be most efficient insulation material. The study provides valuable insights for building design practices energy retrofit strategies and policy development in Cyprus and similar Mediterranean climates while identifying key areas for future research including the integration of embodied energy assessments and consideration of climate change impacts. Finally, a computer software is developed which considers the carbon footprint of a potential building not only in the operational phase of the project, but also the construction phase of the project, providing the opportunity to pick the most environmentally sustainable scenario among all potential scenarios at the briefing stage of the project.
