This study aimed to identify the perceptions of undergraduate students and instructors in the Department of Foreign Language Education regarding the emergency online education and assessment in ELT during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research specifically examined the advantages and disadvantages of online education, the efficacy of emergency training models at universities, and students' practical performance. Employing a qualitative methodology, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews. The participants included 40 students (ten from each academic year) and twelve faculty instructors in the Department of Foreign Language Education. The interviews revealed both disparities and commonalities concerning teaching and assessment during the Covid-19 pandemic. While most undergraduate students expressed positive perceptions, they also acknowledged the comparative ease of passing online exams however, technical hurdles hindered their grasp of course content, resulting in decreased motivation. Instructors shared similar perceptions, recognizing the potential benefits of online education for language teaching, yet also acknowledging technical challenges. In contrast to student perceptions, instructors emphasized that online exams' reliability was lower compared to face-to-face assessments. Instructors and students shared similar viewpoints regarding the importance of face to-face education for comprehensive comprehension and communication of course content. Both groups acknowledged the positive impact of online education on language learning within the Department of Foreign Language Education. Improved knowledge accessibility was notably reported. Furthermore, online exam scores significantly exceeded those of traditional face-to-face settings. On the other hand, this presented a challenge for ELT instructors who perceived online test outcomes as less reliable. Instructors believed they could adapt better to online exams, potentially leading to more feasible academic success. This study also highlighted undergraduates' struggles with communication and technical issues in online courses, favoring face-to-face learning for better understanding. Keywords: Emergency Online Education in English Language Education, Advantages and Disadvantages of Emergency Online Education, Advantages and Disadvantages of F2F Education, Positive and Negative Perceptions of ELT Instructors on Assessment, Positive and Negative Perceptions of ELT Students on Assessment.
Bu çalışma, Covid-19 salgını sırasında İngiliz Dili Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı'ndaki lisans öğrencilerinin ve öğretim görevlilerinin çevrimiçi eğitimin değerlendirilmesi ve çevrimiçi değerlendirmeye ilişkin algılarını araştırmayı amaçlamıştır. Araştırma özellikle çevrimiçi eğitimin avantajlarını ve dezavantajlarını, üniversitelerdeki acil eğitim modellerinin etkinliğini ve öğrencilerin pratik performansını incelemiştir. Nitel bir metodoloji kullanılarak veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yoluyla toplanmıştır. Katılımcılar arasında 40 ELT bölümü öğrencisi (her akademik yıldan on) ve on iki fakülte eğitmeni yer aldı.
