This thesis aims to develop an easy-to-use checklist pertaining to the approach of Universal Design (UD) within the scope of interior architecture for semi-public spaces, such as cafes, in undeveloped cities. The study delves into the concept of UD, tracing its historical evolution and its application in interior architecture. It further explores user diversity and the implementation of UD principles in cafes. The central question examines how UD can create universally accessible and inclusive spaces for all users, regardless of ability, background or age and how this affects their engagement in cafes in undeveloped cities. Additionally, it investigates the strategies that cafes in undeveloped cities employ to effectively implement universal design principles, even without access to professional interior architecture or regulatory frameworks, to achieve inclusivity in their spaces. The research methodology includes a comprehensive literature review, observational case studies and an in-depth analysis of UD implementations in seven local cafes along İsmet İnönü Boulevard in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. The findings reveal both the availability and shortcomings of UD in these cafes, impacting their accessibility, particularly for individuals of all ages, genders and those with disabilities. The study provides actionable recommendations in the form of a checklist and table to enhance accessibility and engagement. The case study of local cafes illustrates the practical application of UD principles and their impact on social engagement and business outcomes. The study concludes by emphasizing the critical role of UD in creating inviting and accessible semi-public spaces, particularly for local cafes in undeveloped cities that lack formal rules and regulations. Keywords: Universal Design, User Diversity, Interior Architecture, Cafe, Application of Universal Design.
