Abstract

Syria has faced a civil war, started in 2011, causing millions of people to flee to many neighboring and over the sea countries. Among other hosting countries, Turkey is the country hosting the most Syrian refugees with 3.74 million. Although hosting countries provide many opportunities, such as free health services, shelters for refugees, etc., it is inevitable for refugees to experience various health problems due to the war- or migration-related conditions they might face. These conditions may cause poor health, a decline in health quality, and even infectious diseases. There are many reasons behind the health problems of refugees, such as post-war living conditions, post-war socioeconomic status, health literacy, language barriers, gender, education, war-related trauma, access to health care services, etc. This study aims to investigate, model, and evaluate the effects of demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, war related conditions, and health literacy on the health status (i.e., mental health, the awareness of protective health services and chronic diseases) of Syrian refugees over the age of 15 who were living outside the camps in Turkey using different logistic regression methods, such as generalized logistic regression and multiple logistic regression. It was obviously found that most of the factors investigated were found to be strongly related to response variables that were investigated in this thesis to varying degrees. Keywords: Syria, Civil War, Mental Health, Chronic Diseases, Awareness of Protective Health Services, Logistic Regression.
