Abstract
This paper presents a critical review of the impact of new technologies on industrial automation from a systems engineering point of view. The discussion covers some of the important technical and organizational issues encountered in the design of flexible automation systems, and provides an overview of the new trends in modelling and control. It is recommended that any industrial automation project needs to be formulated and implemented within the context of cognitive systems engineering. © 1997 PICMET.
