Abstract

This thesis investigates the impact of residents’ empowerment on festival support. It employs the deductive research approach to propose an empirical model to investigate the effect via the mediation link between community attachment and residents’ wellbeing. Additionally, it analyses the moderating effects of economic benefits on the relationship between residents’ empowerment and well-being. Theoretical frameworks are used for the investigation. Specifically, the thesis uses the Social Exchange Theory (SET), Weber’s theory of formal and substantive rationality (WFSR), and empowerment theory to develop hypotheses. These theories are adopted to explain how on-market factors, such as values and beliefs, affect citizens' attitudes toward festivals. They also show how power and authority can increase people's resources, self-esteem, and capacity to influence psychological, sociocultural, political, and economic situations. The convenience sampling method used to gather data from a sample of 510 residents of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The empirical results reveal that residents’ empowerment fosters well-being, community attachment, and support for festivals. It also unveils the mediating role of residents’ well-being in the relationships between the other variables as well as the moderating effect of economic benefits in the moderated-mediation model. These findings highlight the importance of psychologically, sociologically, environmentally, and politically empowering the residents in festival host communities. Thus, the thesis provides practical implications for festival planners, governments, and local authorities, who should be encouraged to communicate the festivals' positive effects and help empower communities to ensure residents’ full support. Additionally, these authorities should ensure that residents are fully aware of the power they hold, and are able to use it to their own advantage to encourage support for festival development in host communities. Keywords: residents’ empowerment, economic benefit, well-being, community attachment, festival support, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
