| dc.description.abstract | On February 6, 2023, two devastating earthquakes struck southern Turkey, followed by a third quake two weeks later-leaving Hatay profoundly scarred both physically and emotionally. This study explores the emotional geography of Hatay post-disaster, focusing on the resilience of place identity despite the destruction of homes, landmarks, and cultural heritage. Through qualitative interviews and thematic analysis, the research investigates how emotional responses, cultural practices, and historical associations sustain place identity amidst profound upheaval. A key innovation of this study is the development of an analysis map, grounded in identity process theory, which visually illustrates the interplay of personal, cultural, and historical dimensions of place identity. This methodological tool offers a structured and replicable approach to understanding how place identity evolves-and endures-in disaster-stricken contexts. Findings reveal that while grief for lost places is widespread, emotional attachments, community solidarity, and symbolic practices foster resilience and continuity. The study underscores the importance of incorporating emotional and cultural dimensions into post-disaster recovery policies to support inclusive and equitable rebuilding. By illuminating the dynamic nature of place identity, this research contributes to emotional geography and provides critical insights for communities navigating long-term recovery from crisis. | |
