Abstract

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and plus (LGBTI+) experience a disproportionate amount of prejudice and discrimination. Indirect contact is one of the most effective ways in reducing prejudice toward different stigmatized groups and improving attitudes, including LGBTI+’s. Parasocial contact is a type of indirect contact which is based on media exposure of viewers to an outgroup member(s). Exposure to outgroup-related parasocial contact has been found to enhance positive attitudes and lower prejudice toward outgroups. The current study aimed to test the effects of a parasocial contact intervention on prejudice reduction toward LGBTI+s using three different conditions: emotion-, human rights-, and economy-based parasocial contact as well as a control group. It was hypothesized that parasocial contact interventions would be effective in reducing prejudice against LGBTI+s compared to the control group in the form of more positive attitudes, greater perspective taking, reduced threat perception, increased support for LGBTI+ rights and lowered social distancing while controlling for prior contact, gender, and social dominance orientation. Additionally, it was hypothesized that there will be differences between the three parasocial contact interventions regarding prejudice toward LGBTI+. A sample of 334 Turkish-speaking young adult university students (234 female and 110 male) at Eastern Mediterranean University completed an online-based survey. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the four conditions. Participants then completed the Social Dominance Orientation, Perspective-Taking, Support LGBTI+ Rights, Symbolic threat, Social Distance, Outgroup attitudes scales and demographic information questionnaire respectively. The findings of the study demonstrated that parasocial contact interventions were found to improve positive outgroup attitudes and increased support for LGBTI+ rights, enhanced perspective-taking, and decreased symbolic threat perceptions compared to the control group. However, parasocial contact interventions were not significant in reducing social distance toward LGBTI+’s. Lastly, there were no significant differences between emotion-, human rights-, and economy-based parasocial contact interventions in reducing prejudice toward LGBTI+. The findings are further discussed within the framework of the limitations and recommendations of this study. Keywords: Parasocial Contact, Prejudice, Outgroup Attitudes, Social Distance, LGBTI+ Rights.
