Abstract
The 2021 Netflix series Squid Game directed by Korean filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk has been credited as Netflix’s Biggest Series Launch in the year 2021. The series garnered a monetary value of about $891 million in addition to 250 game related apps, a warm reception with unforeseen achievements in the film industry, and critiques from various institutions. The series garnered an unexpected popularity that drew in a lot of attention and has resulted in why this research has been conducted. The present study intends to answer the questions as to what elements have been infused in this visual production that makes it draw such attention and what those elements mean to the viewers. To answer this, the research has taken on a semiotic perspective toward identifying a part of the reason as there are other aspects involved. The researcher conducted preliminary research on film theories and concepts for understanding human behaviour before employing semiology as a qualitative research method. Through this, the necessary framework used to draw out the text and image data identifying the signs was initiated. The framework consisted of the use of Charles Sander Peirce’s triadic semiotic concept (icon, index, and symbol), Stuart’s Hall concept of representation and signification, and Roland Barthes’s concept of denotation and connotation. to make visual and verbal (speech) analyses. Through the use of the Qualitative method, a total of 54 signs were discovered but to further aid an understanding of them in the text, the research study employed the use of Roland Barthes’s dyadic semiotic typology (denotation and connotation) and Hall’s representation and Signification theory to discuss what meanings were derived. Overall, the study showed how signs had been used repetitively in different contexts to portray power, fear, relationship and other characteristics to keep viewers immersed and interested. The findings of the research also called to attention and defended the originality, realism, and cultural relativity associated with the Squid Game series, which the director also deems is the basis for Netflix’s series popularity. This is valid as through watching the series and conducting an analysis any reader can determine how the plotline was structured around signs very peculiar to the director’s place of origin.
