Abstract

The flow characteristics of an impinging laminar jet issuing from a rectangular slot of aspect ratio 2 has been investigated numerically through the solution of the three dimensional Navier Stokes and energy equations in steady state. A strong circulation has been found to exist around the flow, which results in the deformation of the rectangular shape of the jet. The cooling of a rectangular chip flush with the impinging plate, having the same size as the slot has also been studied for the range of jet Reynolds numbers between100 and 500 and for jet to wall distance/hydraulic diameter ratios between 2.5 and 10. © 1997, Begell House Inc.
