This paper investigates how young Singaporeans perceive computer-mediated communication and how it has affected their social interaction. The study employs a questionnaire followed by focus group sessions to probe how deeply the Internet has impacted on communication, entertainment, and shopping choices. While some focus group participants felt that online contacts can only be acquaintances, others felt that true friends can be found on the Internet. Respondents avoided Internet communication with parents but accepted it to communicate with siblings. The majority considered their online life as important as their one offline since it provides an alternative, rather than a substitute, platform to communicate and interact with others. © Copyright 2002 Taylor and Francis Group LLC.
