The present study explores the linguistic landscape of public signs and investigates how languages, i.e., Turkish, Greek and English, are used in constructing the public space in Cyprus. The language situation in Cyprus was explored by focusing on whether or not there is a direct relationship between language policy and language use in practice and how language policies impact language use in the public space. The objectives of the study are to explore the language situation in Cyprus by looking in to the linguistic landscape of Larnaca and Kyrenia and analysing the language policy of Cyprus in regards to overt and covert language policies, the effectiveness of the linguistic landscape approach to language vitality, exploring the subjective ethnolinguistic perceptions of the Cyprus community from the north and south of Cyprus. Furthermore, the objective of the study is to find out the perceptions of the residents regarding the language used in the public space. In order to find answers to these questions, the present study followed a mixed method research design which revolves around three methods; two quantitative and one qualitative method. The quantitative methods of research include photographs of the linguistic landscape and Bourhis et al.’s (1981) Subjective Ethnolinguistic Vitality Questionnaire (SEVQ). Semi-structured interview questions for shop owners were also conducted for a qualitative method of research which allowed the researcher to interpret the experiences and feelings of the participants regarding the language used on public space. Data analysis involved SPSS for the quantitative data and stratified random sampling by geographical region; Kyrenia and Larnaca. The findings reveal that there is a significant presence of English which serves as a lingua franca, despite its unofficial status, while Greek and Turkish are underrepresented in the public space in each other’s regions. The findings also reveal how economic motives and weak enforcement of language policies shape public signage. In addition, the perceptions of language vitality among Greek-Cypriots, Turkish-Cypriots and international residents show moderate levels of agreement with a strong correlation between the demographic, status, and institutional factors. Interviews with the residents revealed themes regarding the role of English which is seen as a cosmopolitan language essential for business and international communication. The future of English in Cyprus is seen to be as increasingly significant in the fields of education where English proficiency is seen as necessary for higher education and international opportunities. dc.description.abstractBu çalışma, kamusal işaretlerin dil bilimsel manzarasını inceleyerek Kıbrıs'ta Türkçe, Yunanca ve İngilizcenin kamusal alanın inşasında nasıl kullanıldığını araştırmaktadır.
