Assessment of the Technical Skill Requirements for Industrial Engineering Students Towards Careers in Industry 4.0

Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is an era is inspired the invention of the internet and automation technology. Building on the Third Industrial Revolution - Digital Revolution, Industry 4.0 is typified by a combination of technologies of the physical, digital, and biological spheres in order to enable autonomous smart operations amongst machines, products or devices, internet, and people. Industry 4.0 is characterized by a change in technology, it is also characterized by a change in skills or occupation due to the need for skillful workers in the evolving industry. With the rapid change in technology, it has become important for industrial engineers to learn and relearn technical skills in order to be employable and productive in the labor market. The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook projected a growth of 5% in Industrial Engineering which will produce sufficient job opportunities for students in the field. Various stakeholders have taken it upon themselves to study these technological changes and its impact on engineering education and occupation, however, despite these interventions, there are concerns about the low rate of adoption of the proposed intervention in schools compared to the frequency of technological change. In this study, two surveys directed at engineering experts and engineering students are conducted, the students survey is conducted mainly to investigate students’ perception and knowledge of Industry 4.0 and related technologies however the experts’ survey form the basis of the research works and results of this study; the results of the survey are analyzed, and the skill gaps in the labor market is identified. Some technical and transversal skills were identified, this would drive my recommendation for curriculum inclusion through industry 4.0 inspired courses or programs for Industrial Engineering department at Eastern Mediterranean University. Bazı teknik ve enine beceriler tanımlandı, bu da endüstri mühendisliği bölümü için endüstri 4.0'dan ilham alan kurslar veya programlar aracılığıyla müfredatın dahil edilmesi için önerimi yönlendirecekti.
