Abstract

This thesis investigates the effects of interpersonal relationships and internet use on the political socialization process among college students in North Cyprus. It specifically compares face-to-face interactions and online engagements to determine which mode of communication exerts greater influence on students' political attitudes, values, and behaviors. Political socialization is a continuous process influenced by various agents, including family, peers, education, and media. The advent of digital platforms has significantly altered this process, introducing complexities such as echo chambers, anonymity, and algorithm-driven information exposure. This study adopts a descriptive, quantitative case study approach to assess patterns of interpersonal communication in both physical and digital spheres. By analysing peer networks, the processes of communication and information gathering, it investigates how these interactions influence student’s political viewpoints. A pilot study was conducted with participants outside the main the main sample to ensure reliability and validity. The final survey was distributed to students in the Faculty of Communication of EMU, with a total of 117 responses. Data were analysed using SPSS. Findings indicate that while face-to-face communication still holds a strong influence in political discussions, online communication – especially via social media – has a significant and growing impact, particularly among digital natives. The data suggests a generational shift in the channels of civic engagement and points to the role of digital public spheres in shaping political identity. These findings contribute to ongoing debates about the transformation of democratic participation and civic discourse in the digital age. The results may help educators, policymakers, and communication professionals better understand how youth interact with political content and how to foster more inclusive political engagement in hybrid communication environments.
