Abstract

Thermochemical heat storage (THS) is a promising technology for improving the utilization from renewable energy sources due to its low heat losses, high energy storage density, and long-term heat storage capability. In that regard, synthesis of new sorption materials is critical for advancing THS systems in the future. This study aims to develop composite sorbents and perform energetic, exergetic, and hygro-cyclic analyses for performance comparison of the tested composite sorbents. In this study, nine different THS materials were synthesized using pumice and vermiculite as the host matrices, and CaCl2, LiCl, MgCl2, LiNO3 as the sorbent salts. The nine sorption materials developed and tested in this study are; P-CaCl2, V-CaCl2, P-LiCl, V-LiCl, P-MgCl2, V-MgCl2, P-LiNO3, V-LiNO3, and P-CaCl2-LiCl. All developed composite materials were tested over four consecutive cycles, and their energetic, exergetic, and hygro-cyclic performances were comparatively investigated. It is worth to mention that the developed pumice-salt composites are novel and have not been investigated previously. According to the results, the highest energy density of pumice composites was obtained with P-LiCl at 356 kWh/m3 , and the lowest was with P-LiNO3 at 150 kWh/m3 . Similarly, for vermiculite composites, the energy density was obtained highest with V-LiCl at 492 kWh/m3 , and lowest with V-LiNO3 at 205 kWh/m3 . Based on the general observation, the energy density of vermiculite based-salts was higher; however, the desorption capability was lower compared to pumice based-salts. In addition, P-CaCl2-LiCl had the highest energetic cyclic efficiency among pumice composites (90%), while P-MgCl2 had the lowest with 60%. The highest and lowest energetic efficiencies were found with V-LiCl and V-LiNO3 at 91 and 77%, respectively, for vermiculite composites. The highest exergetic efficiency was obtained with P-LiCl and V-LiCl at 12 and 18%, respectively. The lowest exergetic efficiency were obtained as 3% with P-MgCl2 and 6% with V-LiNO3. According to the testing results, hygro-cyclic efficiencies of pumice-based composites were found higher when compared to vermiculite-based composites. In addition, pumice-based materials showed high structural stability also good thermal performance, and sorption/desorption kinetics over repeating cycles. Whereas vermiculite-based materials showed lower structural stability and desorption capability than pumice composites. The study results showed that the P-CaCl2-LiCl composite provides the highest energetic and hygro-cyclic efficiencies among all the tested sorbents and shows a high exergetic efficiency. Therefore, it could be concluded that pumice based multi-salt composites could be promising THS materials. Further work could be performed in this area for development and optimization of new pumice based multi-salt composites.
