Abstract

Using recycled aggregate in the manufacturing of concrete is a green way to preserve natural resources and lessen pollution in the environment. Various treatment techniques are applied to enhance the appeal of using recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in concrete; however, these techniques increase the cost of the product. This study examined how different mixing techniques impact the mechanical and durability properties of concrete with untreated RCA. For this purpose, eighteen different mixtures were made using two different RCA obtained from ready-mix concrete plant waste and old demolished building waste, three different mixing techniques (Normal mixing approach, two-stage mixing approach and sand envelope mixing approach) and three replacement levels (20%,30%,50%). In the study, it was determined that the two-stage mixing technique reduced the water requirement of concrete and improved the compressive strength by 3.3%, splitting tensile strength by 14.2%, modulus of elasticity by 4.2% and impermeability in RCAn series concretes. Moreover, it was determined that the concrete produced with natural aggregate obtained from old building waste had 21% higher compressive strength and 7.2% higher modulus of elasticity than the concrete with normal aggregate at 20% and 30% replacement levels, respectively. Keywords: concrete, recycling, aggregate, mixing, environment.
