Abstract
This study is about 1960s-70s everyday living in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, where modernity and the concept of the house are assessed around the parameters of the life structured within itself. Köşklüçiftlik district of Nicosia has been chosen as its primary ground. Thus, as a unique difference from the general approaches, the study looks at everyday living instances and reveals the nature of modern living in Nicosia. Oral history through the perspective of the inhabitants of the sampled modern houses helps this disclosure. The investigation follows the trajectory of both the house and everyday living towards modernity from a broader perspective of a Mediterranean island, gradually focusing on Nicosia and Köşklüçiftlik, respectively. The modern houses of the study, with a thorough literature review and the period’s inhabitants' input, are the narrators; thus, the gathered personal experiences and memories provide a strong core for the study. Oral histories conducted with the period’s inhabitants and the period photographs as a method of collecting data on everyday living are supported by the investigation of the spatial configuration of the houses. Within this framework, architectural drawings, field trips, and historical documentation together narrate the story of everyday living in the modernity of Nicosia, Köşklüçiftlik. The data outcome defined modernity in this local context as a united social experience of modernity, secluded in and around modern houses situated at the heart of modernity, and projected an image. This image reflects the overall social state of the Cypriot community at that time, inclusive of political, economic, and cultural assets.
